01
What is the Dempsey Roll?
The name describes an idea linking evasive head movement with alternating attacks. This guide treats it as a movement concept, rather than a fixed punch sequence.
02
Start with Dempsey’s own account
Jack Dempsey discusses bobbing and weaving in the Evasion chapter of Championship Fighting. His account is a useful starting point for understanding the movement behind the modern label.
03
Separate the ingredients
Look at changes in height, movement away from the attack line and the transition to a punch separately. Ask your coach to check the basic movements before combining them.
04
A repeated rhythm has limits
Dempsey describes rhythm changes and ways an opponent can answer bobbing and weaving. Continuous motion alone does not make a complete defence; distance and timing still matter.
05
Before you practise
Check your guard, balance and return to a ready position with a coach. Learn the movements separately before adding speed or punches. Avoid forcing a range of motion that causes pain.
Questions
Is this suitable for a complete beginner?
Learn the guard, balance and basic hooks first. Have a coach check the combined movement rather than copying a fast demonstration.
Does a figure-eight motion make it correct?
The shape alone is not a technique assessment. Distance, timing and balance between actions matter too.
Does Jabcall teach or assess the Dempsey Roll?
This is a reading guide. The web trainer provides colour cues, voice callouts and round timing for a related combination, not form correction.
